Better Identity Coalition

About Us

The Better Identity Coalition is an organization focused on developing and advancing consensus-driven, cross-sector policy solutions that promote the development and adoption of better solutions for identity verification and authentication.

The coalition was launched in February 2018 as an initiative of the Center for Cybersecurity Policy & Law, a non-profit dedicated to promoting education and collaboration with policymakers on policies related to cybersecurity.

In July 2018, the coalition released Better Identity in America: A Blueprint for Policymakers, a report that outlines a comprehensive policy agenda for improving the privacy and security of digital identity solutions. The report highlights five key initiatives:

  1. Prioritize the development of next-generation remote identity proofing and verification systems.

  2. Change the way Americans use the Social Security Number.

  3. Promote and prioritize the use of strong authentication.

  4. Pursue international coordination and harmonization of identity standards.

  5. Educate consumers and businesses about better digital identity solutions.

Our Focus

In 2018, the Better Identity Coalition will focus on the following priorities:

  • Engaging with government to identify where the coalition’s input can be most timely and impactful

  • Outlining the challenges with “first-generation” identity verification and authentication tools

  • Identifying regulatory, policy, or technical barriers that inhibit companies or government from improving these tools

  • Developing new policies and initiatives that can help both government and industry deliver next-generation identity solutions that are not only more secure, but also better for privacy and customer experiences

As government contemplates new policies to improve the quality of digital identity in the United States, the Better Identity Coalition is bringing together leading companies to help policymakers develop innovative ideas that improve security, privacy, and convenience for all Americans.
